Frequently Asked Questions​—JW Language (Android)

JW Language is compatible with the following Android devices:

  • Android tablets and phones running version 5.0 or later

  • Kindle Fire

Support for the following devices is not planned:

  • Android tablets and phones running version 4.4 or earlier

 

You can download content in JW Language using either Wi-Fi or cellular data. In the main menu, tap Settings. Then, select your preferred option from the dropdown menu next to Download over cellular.

 

The ability to adjust audio speed is only available on devices running Android 6.0 or later. Tap Settings in the main menu, then use the dropdown menu next to Global Playback Speed to switch between three audio speeds. While using an activity, use the audio speed icon to change the audio speed within the activity.

 

No. To reduce the space taken by JW Language on your device:

  • Download only specific publications instead of downloading all publications for offline use

  • Download lower resolution videos

 

Audio in the Grammar feature uses the text-to-speech (TTS) feature of your device. You may need to install a different TTS app to hear higher quality audio in the language you’re learning. The playback speed for Grammar audio can be adjusted in the JW Language app settings.

 

Certain features, such as audio speed options, are only available on Android 6.0 or later.

Your primary language is the language you already know. During the setup process, tap Primary Language to choose your primary language.

Tap Settings in the main menu, then change your primary language under the Primary Language menu option.

 

Your target language is the language you desire to learn. During the setup process, you are prompted to select the language you would like to learn.

Choose another target language from the language selector.

Yes, you can install multiple target languages. Tap the language selector, then choose an additional target language.

Tap the menu next to a word, phrase, or picture, then tap Add to Collection. Tap Create New Collection to create a custom collection and enter its name. When you add phrases to a collection while connected to the Internet, the audio is automatically downloaded to your device for offline use.

 

Tap the menu button next to an item in a collection to copy or remove the item. Move the item’s drag bar to reorder the items in the collection.

 

Within a collection, tap the Start Activity button to view the list of activities:

  • Look: Guess the translation of a phrase from multiple choices

  • Match: Select matching pairs of words and pictures, or matching pairs of words and their translations

  • Listen: Play a phrase and choose the correct translation

  • Flash Cards: Guess the translation of phrases before revealing the answer. Change the playback speed by selecting the speed icon. Tap the audio icon to turn the audio playback off or on.

  • Audio Lessons: Listen to a collection of phrases. Tap the Edit button on the sequence bar to choose a suggested sequence or create your own custom sequence.

 

Yes. Tap Settings in the main menu, then use the switch next to Show Romanization to turn Romanization off.

 

Text content is always available, even when you are offline. While connected to the Internet, tap a phrase to stream its audio content. To download audio and video content for offline use, tap the download icon. To download all audio and video content for a target language, navigate to the language selector and tap Download All next to the target language.

 

Yes, you can create a backup of your collections and history. In the Settings menu, choose an option under Back Up and Restore. If you already have a backup file, you can restore your collections and history at any time. If you restore a collection with the same name as a collection on the device, the collection on the device is overwritten.
